Love at First Listen: Madi Diaz- Weird Faith Album/ Amie Blue - Everything About Her

Madi Diaz - Weird Faith Link to Album

Shout-out to my friend Ryan who called me to tell me this album had came out so I could stop what I was doing just to listen. Madi Diaz has been a long-time fave since I saw her open for Waxahatachee a few years ago. I was lucky to see her playing her own headlining show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg this week, sweetly pronouncing "I'm not opening for anyone!" after reaching this much deserved career milestone. Her discography, particularly her History of a Feeling album, has always had a special place in my heart. Madi's very good about writing through the raw mess and her music often helps me put into words feelings I have yet to understand. On her newest release, Madi is back at it writing through the messy 'obsessive thoughts' and anxieties of love and navigating after painful relationships. Madi's confessional style shines through in songs like Girlfriend, where she writes about her parasocial fascination with her current partner's ex-girlfriend : "In some alternate universe we may be kind of close. You're so pretty I see everything I saw when he first saw you. I wanna know what the two of you had". You hear it the breathtaking album opener Same Risk, where she's inquiring navigating a reluctance to trust a new partner and fear of risk: "Do you think this is going to ruin your life? I feel mean for thinking this . Are you going to throw me under the bus? On Weird Faith, Madi's firmly dedicated to her characteristic sense of honesty, unafraid to showcase her own messiness though her songwriting even showing herself as the one doing the hurting, like on Hurting You or Get to Know Me. One of my favorites For Months Now , Madi details the process of falling out of love with a shitty partner and the slow deterioration of her feelings with each incident of his bad behavior : It happened in your car and again at the bar. It  doesn't matter where we are, it's a pattern. You  get to fall apart, you're selfish, you don't think you are. Little things are the biggest part of the matter. While there are so many incredible hits on this albums, for me Don't Do Me Good is a knockout. With an incredible cameo from Kacey Musgraves, this duet provides us with some of Madi's strongest vocals and a magical enticing and hard-hitting chorus : Every time I try to walk away, I stay. You knew I would. I know loving you, it don't do me good. Every time I wake up crying, I'm denying what I should. I know loving you, it don't do me good. It don't do me good, it don't do me good. It don't do me good . So do yourself a favor and listen to this album stat.

Everything About Her - Amie Blue

This hypnotic diddy has a light and mellow presentation underpinned by a playful synth and light guitar strums that disguises its pointed call out. Amie's chorus challenges the listener, a former lover, to reflect on his actions and hypocrisy inflicting the pain on her that was once inflicted on him. Turns out you're just like her. A liar. And I'm a fool. She reveals to her lover that he has embodied everything about the woman that had once hurt him and made him jaded. I saw you fall down. With all that hate. Too much to carry. And in her effort to help him, she realizes it's unsuccessful because he's destined to repeat this pattern of harm : You know just how it feels. But you do it anyways. It's such an oddly pleasant song.
